| A group of more than 170 islands spread over an area of the South Pacific roughly the size of Japan, Tonga is the last Polynesian monarchy, and the only Pacific nation never colonised by Europeans. Traditional Tongan culture is still strong, heavily overlaid with Christianity of various denominations. The Sabbath is observed more strictly here than almost anywhere else in the world
The colourful coral reefs surrounding the islands lend themselves to great diving and snorkelling and humpback whales make their yearly migration through the warm waters. |
