The 15 islands of the Cook Islands consist of the high island of Rarotonga, a partially raised atoll, Aitutaki, the raised atolls of Mangaia, Atiu, Mitiaro and Mauke, and several atolls. The two most developed islands by far are Rarotonga, and Aitutaki, a 40 minute flight away.

Diving outside the reef is very well catered for on both Rarotonga and Aitutaki, while snorkelling is possible virtually everywhere in both islandslagoons. A marine reserve near Muri, on the southeastern coast of Rarotonga, provides the best snorkelling, however. Gamefishing trips on charter launches leave daily from the harbour at Avarua, Rarotonga‘s main town, and Avana, on the island‘s eastern coast.

Rarotonga and Aitutaki both have large resorts. These offer a variety of equipment for hire, including snorkelling gear, catamarans, Windsurfers and kayaks. Many also have glassbottomed boats for lagoon excursions.
