Vintage charts have been around for a long time. The first was published in 1935 by the International Wine and Food Society, but there may well have been others before that. They are a useful guide that relates to the overall and general quality of the vintage. The chart cannot advise about exceptional or bad results of an individual producer or wines. A region can experience, in any given season, a variety of results, depending on the vineyard site, its exposure, soils, viticultural management, yields and luck. A skilled winemaker can produce excellent wines in a "bad” year, but conversely, a less talented or inexperienced winemaker can produce ordinary wines in the "best” years. The chart below should be used purely as a guide. For detailed vintage information it is prudent to consult individual wineries. An assessment of the 2006 cannot be made until the wines have been matured, fined and finally blended. |
